The European Digital Twin Ocean is a consistent\, high-resolution\, multi-dimensional and near real-time virtual representation of the ocean that aims to make ocean data accessible and actionable to all\, empowering researchers\, decision-makers\, innovators and citizens to grow our shared knowledge about the ocean and act for its future.  .  \nThe EDITO platform – the core\, public infrastructure of the European Digital Twin Ocean –  offers cutting-edge tools for developing digital twins\, making science-based decisions\, and ensuring maximum impact for research and innovation actions across the key objectives of the EU Mission Ocean & Waters: protect biodiversity\, stop marine pollution\, and support a sustainable blue economy. The platform integrates a wide range of data sources including observations from thousands of sensors and satellites\, artificial intelligence\, and advanced modelling to make ocean data readily available to all. Building on existing European assets\, EDITO upgrades\, combines and integrates data and services from EMODnet and the Copernicus Marine Service into a single digital framework. SUMMARY:EDITO-Model Lab Hackathon: The next wave of ocean innovation
DESCRIPTION:The EDITO-Model Lab Hackathon was officially launched at the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice\, marking a major step in building a community around the European Digital Twin Ocean. This four-month sprint is the largest among the various capacity-building actions of the EDITO-Model Lab project\, bringing together dozens of intermediate users from across Europe\, including numerical modelers\, programmers\, pure researchers\, and data scientists. \nParticipants are working with the EDITO platform to develop new Focus Applications for real-world scenarios\, from predicting oil spills to tracking marine plastic. This initiative isn’t just about expanding technical skills; it’s about creating a thriving community that will continue to drive the uptake of EDITO beyond the project’s lifespan. \nThese Focus Applications for intermediate users complement the added value of EDITO-Model Lab which also produced various What-if Scenarios for end users (policymakers\, applied researchers\, innovators\, blue economy actors\, and the society at large) to simulate the impacts of concrete ocean and coastal actions. \nPlease stay tuned for more details on the hackathon’s final event where the participants will showcase their results.

SUMMARY:EDITO at the UN Ocean Conference 2025
DESCRIPTION:From 2–13 June 2025\, the international ocean community gathered in Nice\, France for the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC). EDITO was present throughout the event\, participating in high-level sessions and demonstrations at the European Digital Ocean Pavilion\, which was located in the Green Zone\, ‘The Whale.’ \nOrganised by the European Commission’s DG DEFIS in partnership with DG RTD\, DG MARE\, and DG INTPA\, and implemented by Mercator Ocean International\, the Pavilion showcased Europe’s commitment to using digital innovation for sustainable ocean management and global collaboration. \nDesigned around three immersive zones—INSPIRE\, ENGAGE\, and DECIDE—the Pavilion offered a dynamic gateway into the EU Digital Twin Ocean. Here\, visitors could explore ocean processes\, run “What-if” scenarios\, and experience real-time insights through interactive displays\, simulations\, and storytelling tools. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\nProgramme highlights included:\nJune 3–5: One Ocean Science Conference\nEDITO kicked off with multiple sessions during the One Ocean Science Conference\, including a presentation on habitat suitability mapping to protect marine ecosystems and a session on next-generation ocean modelling. An EDITO-led poster exhibition ran in parallel\, showcasing our advances in digital twin applications for coastal resilience. \n June 4: Town Hall – Marine Knowledge at the Fingertips of our Communities\nIn this dialogue session\, EDITO demonstrated how digital twins bring ocean data directly to communities and stakeholders\, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in marine knowledge systems. \nJune 5: Training Workshop – What-if Scenarios (WiS)\nAt the INSPIRE Arena\, EDITO lead a hands-on training session for policymakers and practitioners on using What-if Scenarios to explore marine policy impacts—from planning aquaculture to mitigating marine litter and enhancing biodiversity. \nJune 6: International Weather & Climate Forum\nEDITO participated in a roundtable on future digital ocean apps and delivered a dedicated media workshop\, showing how digital ocean tools can strengthen science communication and public engagement. \nJune 8 & 9: World Ocean Day – DTO for the Ocean Pact\nOn World Ocean Day (Sunday\, 8 June)\, EDITO joined the global community in celebrating the marine realm and in highlighting the critical importance of protecting our Ocean. \nOn Monday\, 9 June\, EDITO supported discussions around the Ocean Pact and how digital innovation can fast-track SDG14\, offering new mechanisms for monitoring and protecting marine ecosystems. \nJune 13: EDITO-Model Lab Hackathon Launch\nClosing out the programme\, EDITO launched a multi-partner hackathon focused on developing and testing real-world applications—from oil spill simulation to plastic pollution tracking—directly on the EDITO platform.
